Former Evangelical Pastor Tells of Conversion to LDS Church
For more than 27 years, as an evangelical pastor, Tom Scott believed that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Mormons”) was a cult, far from believers in Christ.
Then,
through a series of events, including moving into a “Mormon”
neighborhood in Provo, Utah, Tom and his wife, Maggie, had interactions
with members of the LDS Church that showed them otherwise. They not only
ended up converting to the LDS Church, but Tom has now written a book, recently published by Arizona-based Inglestone Publishing, titled: It’s True: An Evangelical Pastor’s Journey to Truth in the Mormon Church.
“Not
in a million years would we have dreamed that this was the plan for us.
However the peace that we are experiencing tells us that we are exactly
where we belong,” Scott said.
Of the LDS people, he said,
“Get to know them. You’ll be overwhelmed by the love of people that
exemplify the love of Christ in a way you can’t even imagine. That’s
what drew us to the Latter-day Saints Church.”
The
intent, with his book and with speaking engagements across the country,
is not to disparage other religions or convince anyone of the truth of
the LDS Church. Instead, he hopes to foster understanding about the nature of the LDS Church as well as create greater unity among all faiths.
He
added, “Many share the scripture: ‘And ye shall know the truth and the
truth shall make you free.’ However, through this process, I’ve learned
it’s only the truth that you KNOW that can set you free, and you must be
willing to KNOW that truth for this to happen!”
His
ultimate hope is to encourage all who claim that they are
Christians—including those who are LDS—to live in a more Christ-like
manner.
“My heart’s cry is for all church and denominations and their wonderful people. My prayer
is that, by God’s grace, they might experience truth in their lives and
movements. I know this: the Heavenly Father loves all His children and
is always reaching in love to bring unity to His people.”
